Karl Heideck Simplifies Pennsylvania’s Employment Law

Having practiced law in a number of contract law and employment disciplines for more than ten years, Philadelphia-based attorney Karl Heideck works relentlessly to help businesses carry out the best interests of their employees.

Karl Heideck revealed some factors to take into account about the workforce. He gave the example of how a business must follow the practices of the Pennsylvania Child Labor Law when providing work for legal minors or persons under the age of 18.

He conveyed that while the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) emphasizes rules for minimum wage practices and overtime, it is critical to keep in mind the federal rules do not take precedence over state laws.

Another area of importance, Heideck discussed how the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) secures the leave eligible employees are entitled to during family or medical requests. He noted some of the reasons for obtaining leave include looking after spouses, parents children with serious health problems, having a new baby or their own significant well being.

As part of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Heideck urges employers to provide elderly workers the same rights as young people or face discrimination lawsuits.

Heideck drew attention to how important it is to understand the substantial variations between part-timers and independent contractors and whether to hold back income and Social Security taxes.

According to Heideck, businesses should be familiar with Hiring, Harassment and Discrimination: Equal Employment Laws. He indicated while the federal Equal Employment Opportunities Commission, (EEOC), may come to mind first, small businesses should recognize the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission and the state’s Human Relations Act may have more fair hiring practices guidelines than the EEOC.

What’s more, Heideck called attention to situational regulations that are enforced by city, county or townships.

Heideck began his education at Swarthmore College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. Heideck later went on to graduate with a Juris Doctor degree from Temple University’s James E. Beasley School of Law.

A contract attorney with Hire Counsel, Heideck also practiced law with Pepper Hamilton LLP and Conrad O’Brien. Heideck’s services span from compliance consulting and risk management guidance to employment measures and commercial litigation.
