Retired Professor Donates $1 million To College

There is a new planetarium that is undergoing construction at Orange Coast College. A retired professor who has a strong bond with the popular college donated one million dollars to fund a Foucault pendulum, which is a device that demonstrates the Earth in rotation. Officials are excited for the new pendulum as it will be the only one of its kind in Orange County. The professor’s name is Mary McChesney who retired from OCC in 1983. She is looking forward to the new center and states that it will be a “center of scientific studies for college students as well as the surrounding community.” The 91-year-old professor is looking forward to the finished structure and the promising future it will provide for many. Mary McChesney taught English and Spanish at Orange Coast College for 33 years and has taken part in many scholarship foundation programs. The planetarium broke ground in 2016 and will include a 129 seat auditorium that features a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Science on a Sphere display globe. Mary McChesney is a former instructor at Orange Coast College, and years after her retirement she has returned to the institution and donated about $1milion which the institution management plans to use the donation to purchase equipment used to demonstrate earth rotation which is known as Foucault pendulum.
